Kitchen renovation in progress in the GTA with cabinets being installed and a step ladder

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

In Toronto and the GTA, a typical kitchen renovation takes 4–8 weeks of on-site work. A simple refresh can be done in 2–3 weeks; a large custom kitchen with structural changes can run 8–12 weeks. On top of that, allow lead time before the project starts for design and cabinet ordering.

Kitchen renovation timeline, week by week

  • Before start (2–6 weeks): design, quote, cabinet and countertop ordering, permits if needed.
  • Week 1: demolition and disposal.
  • Weeks 1–2: rough-in — plumbing, electrical, framing — then inspections.
  • Weeks 2–3: drywall, flooring and paint.
  • Weeks 3–5: cabinet installation, then countertop template and install.
  • Weeks 5–6: backsplash, fixtures, appliances and finishing.
  • Final days: deficiency fixes, cleanup and walkthrough.

What makes a kitchen reno take longer

  • Moving plumbing, gas or walls (and the permits that come with it)
  • Custom cabinetry with long lead times
  • Stone countertops (templated only after cabinets are in)
  • Condo rules — board approval, elevator booking and restricted hours
  • Surprises behind old walls — wiring, plumbing, structure

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my kitchen during the renovation?

Usually not for most of it. Many homeowners set up a temporary kitchen with a fridge, microwave and kettle.

What causes the most delays?

Cabinet and countertop lead times, and change orders mid-project. Locking the design early keeps things on schedule.
